The article is devoted to the analysis of the geopolitical ideas of Vasily Nikolaevich Khitrovo and his practical actions to strengthen Orthodoxy in the Holy Land. His main subject was to defend the Orthodox Russian pilgrims; preservе Orthodox culture; to educate the local Orthodox Arab population and to support the Antiochian Orthodox Church. For the first time, the inseparable unity of V.N. Khitrovo’s service to the creation and development of credit cooperation and Orthodox ideals in the Holy Land, the financial foundations of the decisions of the St. Petersburg Committee of Savings, Loan and Industrial Partnerships 14 and the Imperial Orthodox Palestinian Society, that is, those two structures in which V.N. Khitrovo was simultaneously secretary for a number of years, are considered. His multilateral activities in the Middle East and its long-term consequences are also considered. The personal qualities and many years of activite of V.N. Khitrovo in different areas of activity (financial, economic, analytical, historical and political science, research and others) have been explored in this text. The influence of Khitrovo’s personal qualities on the formation and development of his concept has been investigated for the first time. Using the example of V.N. Khitrovo and his closest associates, the motivational foundations of the interaction of the importance of hi assistance to the Russian pilgrimage movement for the foreign policy of the Russian Empire at the end of the XIX century is investigated. The periodization of Khitrovo’s activities in the Holy Land is justified: the first with Archimandrite Antonin (Kapustin) (1877–1894) and the second — in cooperation with Khitrovo’s future successor as secretary of the Imperial Orthodox Palestinian Society, diplomat, consul in Damascus (later became Consul General) A.P. Belyaev (1894–1903). It is shown that Orthodoxy was the basis that strengthened the fusion of beliefs and actions of Khitrovo and his associates, as well as explaining the sequence of their activities. The strength of the personality of the Cunning thinker was in the practical implementation of his views and theoretical solutions in practice. It is also shown how, thanks to the works of Khitrovo and Imperial Palestine Orthodox Society, the attitude of the local population towards Orthodox education changed, the receipt of which became attractive to them, which in turn changed the general situation, strengthening Russia’s position in the region. The study of the texts that came out from Khitrovo’s pen showed how his vital and practical position was determined, and what motivated his specific decisions and actions. Khitrovo’s beliefs, reflected in his written texts (articles published by him, as well as the contents of the IPPO periodicals published by him, correspondence, andaccounting documentation of the structures he led), show the integrity of the personality and its significance in a number of important events in Russian history in the context of understanding the role of Russia in the system of international relations at the end of the XIX-th — beginning of the ХХ-th century. © 2024, Evgenii Palamarenko.
